Our History
Building Contractors in East Sussex
CRB was founded in 1979 by Malcolm Clear. Malcolm was working as a draughtsman but could not afford to pay a contractor to replace his own failing roof, he researched roofing and found that council grants were available for reroofing projects. He decided to learn more about roofing and complete the work himself. Armed with nothing more than a library book and a willing friend to lend a hand, Malcolm successfully completed his own roof. A neighbour who had watched the project with interest then asked Malcolm if he would be prepared to do her roof.
Having enjoyed the process Malcolm tackled his first paid roofing job and continued going from strength to strength. The company expanded and during the 80's and 90's further tradesmen were employed by Malcolm and CRB naturally expanded into an all encompassing roofing and building service. The company had a fast period of growth due to the 1987 hurricane which caused widespread roofing and structural damage across Eastbourne.
Further notable periods of growth coincided with other keystone projects such as The Grand Hotel fire repairs in the 90s and The East Sussex National Golf Resort Spa construction in 2006. The Spa construction project also coincided with CRB's first annual turnover figures in excess of £1million. During this time, Ben Clear, Malcolm's son took on the role of Contracts Manager. Ben has introduced many new technologies and processes into the business. In 2008 Ben took a 50% share of the business and a Directorship.
In 2010, existing tradesman Scott Perry was promoted to the role of Contracts Managers and Ben Clear took the Managing Director role. Malcolm moved to a consultant position and continues to lend his expertise and invaluable experience gained in over thirty years of building and roofing.
