100mph CRB, Take Two

100mph CRB

Some of you may remember from previous updates that we sponsor a friend of mine (Shaun Parker) who races Formula 2 sidecars and that he did rather well at the Isle of Mann TT. He recently partnered up with a former driving partner (Matt Dix) and together they are doing rather well again. Yesterday, they invited me up to Brands Hatch racing circuit to not just watch one of their final rounds of this year's racing, but also to have a go myself. Yes, you heard that right, to have a go myself. Now I'm not easily scared and I'm not unfamiliar with Brands Hatch having raced cars there myself but I've never been into bikes and certainly never been a passenger on a formula sidecar. Nothing quite prepared me for what came next. Shaun showed me where to hold on and where to lean; this basically entails hanging you head over one side when turning right and sticking your bottom off the other side when turning left. Put this together in a quick series of corners and its quite a dance whilst going 100mph and remembering to hold on. I shared my bullish attitude to fear with Matt the driver before we started and he replied “Ok then, I'll give you a lap top get used to it and then I'll wind it up”. We were about 100yards down the track when I realised my mouth had written a cheque my body wasn't prepared to cash. I managed to get the hang of throwing myself from one side to the other but soon realised I'd forgotten to ask what I do when we were going in a straight line. It's amazing what wind resistance my above average width hips offered down the pit straight, so much I genuinely wondered whether my hands could still hold me in the sidecar and stop me flying off like a some sort of bloated kite. Needless to say, I somehow managed to survive and can confirm it was the most fun I'd had in a while. I think I know the answer to this already but if any of you want to have a go, we will be holding sponsors days next season, shall I book you a ride? PS. I did not win the trophies, obviously that was done by Matt and Shaun, I was just busy trying not to die.
