Back to the floor

For those of you on tenterhooks every month (there must be one of you?) I'm happy to report good progress on the garden office build at home. For new readers, this is a bespoke cedar clad insulated office I am building by myself at home, and despite the notion I am a builder, my skills very much lay in the area of telling others how to do it well. I'm learning a huge amount about what my staff do every day and how they organise their work. I've made a few minor mistakes along the way and it's resounded with me how if my staff had made similar mistakes it would have affected their 'balanced scorecard' which is the bonus scheme we operate that rewards everything from excellent feedback from our clients to how neatly you store your tools, but takes money away for errors made which cost either time or money to resolve. Equally the experience has reminded me of something my staff asked me to do long, long ago and I never quite got round to; Back to the Floor. At a staff meeting during our open forum, where anyone can ask me anything and hold me accountable (terrifying, believe me) the guys asked me to go on site and work with them periodically so I could have a clearer picture of what goes on every day. Now I have worked on many a building site before so I'm not a completely hands off Managing Director but the idea planted a seed I've not really stopped growing since. As such, between the staff and the garden room, I've now decided I will go 'back to the floor' periodically and go and muck in at ground level. I'm hoping it will teach me more about how my team operates and interacts, but I'm also hoping we can use the experience to really improve on site project management and deliver more projects early. I'll let you know how it goes….
