Performance Management

Keeping and maintaining a top team is absolutely essential. CRB Building & Roofing ensures optimal performance by employing a performance management system, a form of guidance more commonly found in much larger organisations. This system covers several keys areas as detailed below:

Bonus Scheme

CRB Building & Roofing rewards our staff for excellent performance in many categories. Many large builders simply reward their staff according to yearly profit, but CRB feels this is too arbitrary and doesn’t directly correspond to the true input of its staff. As such, CRB Building & Roofing staff are monitored and rewarded for excellent performance in many areas, including:

  • Cleanliness: All vans are inspected inside and out for good cleanliness and organisation of tools. Building sites are also inspected weekly to ensure good housekeeping.
  • Customer Feedback: If 90% or more of our clients rate our overall service as excellent, our staff receive additional bonuses.
  • Going the Extra Mile: When a member of staff does something out of the ordinary, for example, attending an emergency job out of hours or working a weekend to help keep a project on target, they are rewarded with an additional bonus.
  • Health & Safety: Examples of good health and safety practice are monitored, recorded and rewarded accordingly.
  • Training & Training Forums: When a member of staff learns a new skill, we ask them to deliver a presentation on that skill at the next staff meeting. Not only does this generate interest among other members of staff, but it also increases everyone’s understanding of trades in which they are not directly or frequently involved.

One-to-One Sessions

Each member of staff sits down for a one-to-one session with the Contracts Manager every six months. The purpose of this is to discuss the individual’s performance over the past six months, observe which targets they have met and which new targets should be set for the next six months. Key performance indicators, such as timekeeping, appearance and uniform, are also assessed. This meeting is also a chance for each person to raise any concerns, in a private space.

"Of all the things I have introduced at CRB," explains Ben, "The one-to-one meeting is the one that gives me the most pleasure. When we started Performance Management, some staff thought it was going to be some form of discipline procedure and approached the first meetings with trepidation. But within one meeting, literally, I saw labourers, some of whom had not previously had a chance to reflect on their progress, uplifted because their career paths were now mapped out ahead of them. They could see targets and practical assistance from us to help them reach their goals. I was also surprised by how the older staff took so keenly to it, went off to learn new skills and came back with such enthusiasm for new products and skills."
